Different calamities that occur in the Philippines

Social media serves as the instrument of the people for them to keep updated with what’s happening in their surroundings. Calamities such as earthquakes, typhoons, landslides, volcanic eruptions, and fire are the calamities that often occur in our country.

1. Volcanic Eruption

Volcanic eruption is an activity wherein the lava and gas are being released from a volcano. Back then, when the Taal volcano erupted, the news about the eruption was all over social media which it leads people to be informed about the event. Not just to be informed but also it leads them to help those people who are affected by the occurrence.

5 ways to do during the volcanic eruptions

  • Avoid going outside to prevent breathing the air or the dust that came from the volcanic eruption.
  • Close all the windows and doors of the house.
  • Use face masks and goggles when it is urgent to go outside.
  • Go to the prescribed evacuation area when needed.
  • Keep updated with the latest news about the volcanic activity on television, radio, or even in social media.

2. Typhoon

It is a large storm system having a circular or spiral system of violent winds, typically hundreds of kilometers or miles in diameter. It often damages infrastructures due to its heavy rains and winds. We are always updated even though there’s no television or even radio since there are social media that keep us updated every minute. The news on television and radio can be able to see on social media.  As of December 2021, a typhoon named Odette was all over social media since PAG-ASA announced it as a typhoon which leads the public to be informed.

  • Be alert.
  • Avoid going outside unless you are instructed to do so.
  • Prepare all the necessary needs in case that you need to evacuate.
  • Stay indoors
  • Keep in touch with your family and keep updated with the news on whatever device is available.

3. Earthquake

An earthquake is the shaking or trembling of the ground. Sometimes an earthquake is destructive that causes infrastructures to collapse. Last December 14,2021 around 5 pm, 5.3 earthquakes occurred. PHIVOLCS was able to quickly report the news about the earthquake. Besides that, we were able to contact our loved ones about the earthquake.

  • Stay calm, panicking might get the situation worse.

4. Landslides

A landslide is defined as the movement of a mass of rock, debris, or earth down a slope. Recently, last October 2021, 2 hours of monsoon rains caused flash floods and landslides in Nabas, Aklan. The news was spread rapidly on different social media platforms, which leads them to seek help.


3 ways to prevent landslides
  • Plant trees.
  • Avoid cutting trees.
  •  Control soil erosion by planting vegetation.

5. Fire

Fires start when a flammable and/or combustible material with an adequate supply of oxygen or another oxidizer is subjected to enough heat. As fire is occurring in every area in the Philippines at the same time, social media plays a big role which allowing people to report or post the current situation of the place and leading them to seek help.


5 ways to prevent fire
  • Make sure that you have a fire extinguisher at home.
  • Unplug the appliances when not in use.
  • Keep the flammable items away from the heat.
  • Check the wirings if it is still in the right condition.
  • Avoid unattended use of candles.
